Currently, many electric vehicle owners encounter the situation where their vehicles are still functioning, but the battery’s range is insufficient. As a result, many citizens choose to replace the battery, with some opting for second-hand electric vehicle batteries to save money. Experts in electric vehicle maintenance caution that second-hand batteries pose certain risks and advise citizens not to replace them.
On the afternoon of the 28th, a reporter from Qilu Evening News visited an electric vehicle repair shop near the machine tool factory on Xinan Road in Dezhou City, where a technician was replacing a second-hand battery in an electric vehicle. “Replacing the second-hand battery is cheaper,” said Mr. Wang, a customer. His electric vehicle had been in use for almost two years, and its battery’s range was no longer adequate. Replacing the battery with a second-hand one seemed like a good option, especially because of the low cost.
Mr. Zhang, the shop owner, explained to the reporter, “We replace about thirty sets of batteries every month, and the sales of second-hand batteries are nearly the same as brand new ones.” Electric vehicle batteries can generally be classified into brand batteries and second-hand batteries. Brand new batteries cost between 340 yuan and 400 yuan, with a warranty period of one year. Second-hand batteries are removed from old electric vehicles, undergo simple repairs, and are resold at a lower price, typically between 20 yuan and 25 yuan for an old-for-new exchange, with a warranty of six months. The low price has led to good sales of second-hand electric vehicle batteries.
Mr. Wang Hao, a technician with five years of experience in electric vehicle maintenance, said that second-hand batteries have certain risks. For second-hand batteries that have been repaired, the cruising range may initially reach 40 kilometers per day, but their lifespan is difficult to guarantee. The so-called six-month warranty often means that the second-hand battery will need to be replaced multiple times until it exceeds the warranty period.
A staff member from the Dezhou City Quality Supervision Bureau mentioned that, currently, there are no specific regulations regarding the supervision of second-hand batteries. The second-hand battery market is chaotic, and there is no way to conduct specific oversight.
