Let us understand the Start-stop car battery and Start-stop system

2021-11-11 17:30

Nowadays there are so many traffic lights on the road that sometimes we spend more time waiting for the red light than driving. In response, in Europe, where the car industry is developed, automatic stop-start systems have been developed to reduce unnecessary idling and reduce emissions while saving fuel.

This sounds like a good idea, but it's not -- it's easy to miss the boat if you don't know how to use and maintain a start-stop system, which can even damage the engine, starter and battery.

Brief introduction of common start and stop working principle

The start-stop system mainly has an enhanced starter with an AGM battery, SISS cylinder direct spray ignition start engine, BSG power activation and ISG integrated motor / generator.

The most primary and widely used start-stop system -AGM battery + enhanced motor.

To be precise, the start-stop system is called idle-stop, and the main booster starter and AGM battery (reinforced battery) are used to start the engine.

Start-stop car battery

Since this way is not much different from ordinary start-up vehicle mode, the battery and starter need to withstand a large pressure while needing more sensors and controller detection control. This way is the most important to strengthen the starters and batteries.

Most of this type of start-stop system uses a separation combination starter, that is, each time the starter gear needs to be combined with the flywheel, increase the working pressure of the starter, so that the engine speed must be waited for the engine speed to zero (partially start and stop system starter uses a common binding type, the engine speed does not need to fall to zero, and the engine can be activated at any speed).

AGM battery

Therefore, the starter needs to strengthen its durability, using a permanent magnet type, strengthen the number of forks, increase the number of brushes, and strengthen the gear and other measures to cause the starter to experience high intensity. So vehicles equipped with such start-stop systems have a starter that is more durable than a conventional starter, with a service life of up to 300,000 cycles.

a larger capacity battery

In addition, the battery also needs to be specially strengthened, so that it can be charged and discharged quickly, but also need to have a high capacity to cope with the engine shutdown of the car with electrical work.

Ordinary lead-acid batteries cannot discharge multiple current in the break time, and their partitions cannot allow ionospheres to pass quickly. Therefore, a car having a start-stop function requires a larger capacity battery.

AGM technology (adsorbed glass fiber separator) and EFB technology (enhanced water filling battery) can greatly increase the rated capacity of battery storage.

Vehicles using the start-stop system mainly use AGM lead-acid batteries with ultrafine glass fiber separators. This AGM lead-acid battery has high acid resistance, adsorption electrolyte is stronger, so as to achieve smaller internal resistance, prolong the life of lead-acid tired battery; Most importantly, its deep discharge performance is good, allowing a short time of frequent large current discharge.

At this stage, AGM lead-acid battery is used to solve the two main start-stop problems of start-stop system, namely, large current and frequent output. However, the self-discharge rate of the battery is high, and the monthly discharge rate is 3-5%. When the storage period exceeds 6 months, it needs to be recharged. Therefore, vehicles equipped with start-stop system need to be carefully used and maintained.

At the same time, car with the start and stop system needs to take care of the start and stop battery, it is worth noting that when replacing the start and stop battery, do not change into ordinary batteries, otherwise the start and stop system will cause a great impact!
