How to maintain lead-acid batteries?

Temperature

The temperature has a great impact on the battery. Too high or too low will lead to decrease in battery life (high temperature leads to overcharging, low temperature leads to insufficient charging), especially high temperature will have particularly obvious impact on battery life. Generally speaking, the ambient temperature should be controlled at around 25°C.

Depth of discharge (DOD)

The depth of discharge also has a great impact on battery life. The greater the depth of discharge of the battery, the less the number of cycles, so try to avoid deep discharge when using it. Small current discharge is easy to cause deep discharge.

Float voltage

Battery is a backup working mode, it is charging when the main electricity is normal, and will only be discharged when the power is cut off. In order to prolong the service life of the battery, it is necessary to set the float voltage reasonably. If the float voltage is too low, it will lead to insufficient charging and irreversible sulfation of the negative electrode of the battery; if the float voltage is too high, it will accelerate the loss of water and the corrosion of the positive plate. In addition, batteries of different types, different specifications, and different batches cannot be mixed, as mixing will result in inconsistent floating charge voltages of each single-cell battery.

Charging current

The battery charge and discharge current is generally expressed by C, and the actual value of C is related to the battery capacity. For example, for a 100AH battery, C=100A. Generally speaking, the optimal charging current of lead-acid maintenance-free batteries is about 0.1C. Too large or too small charging current will affect the service life of the battery.

Regular maintenance

The battery should be checked regularly after a period of use, and the corresponding maintenance should be done according to the quality of the mains power supply. In places where the quality of main electricity is good and there is no power outage for a long time, the battery should be activated and discharged at regular intervals to prevent the battery from being in a floating charge state for a long time and its activity will deteriorate. The time interval can be once every six months, and the depth of discharge is about 30% of the battery capacity.
