How to add distilled water to lead acid battery to extend its storage capacity?
2023-03-09 18:00In our daily life, such as our mobile phones, power packs, battery cars, cars and other products, we all need the power provided by batteries. The duration of the battery directly affects our experience of using the product. The long or short storage capacity is also a standard for evaluating the quality and technical capability of the battery product.Today, let's learn about "how to add distilled water to lead acid batteries to extend their storage capacity".
What is a lead-acid battery?
The electrode is mainly made of lead and its oxide. The electrolyte is a kind of battery with sulfuric acid solution. In the discharge state, the main component of the positive pole is lead dioxide, and the main component of the negative pole is lead;Under the charging state, the main components of positive and negative electrodes are lead sulfate, which is divided into exhaust type batteries and maintenance free lead-acid batteries. The batteries are mainly composed of tubular positive plate, negative plate, electrolyte, separator, battery tank, battery cover, pole, liquid injection cover, etc. The machine room generally uses lead-acid energy storage batteries, which generally supply power to the equipment in the machine room as backup power through UPS.
Which batteries need distilled water?
1. Lead acid batteries with a capacity of less than 20% are seriously short of water and must.
2. Lead acid batteries with a capacity of less than 40% and more than 20% are short of water, so it is recommended to supplement water for repair.
3. Lead acid batteries with a capacity of less than 60% and more than 40% are not short of water. If conditions permit, the repair effect of water replenishing batteries will be better.
4. If the capacity decreases by less than 60%, there is no shortage of water and no need to supplement.
The amount of water supplement for six cells of lead-acid batteries should not vary significantly under normal conditions. The specific amount of water supplement for each lead-acid battery depends on the degree of water loss of the lead-acid battery. In a word, during the whole repair process, it shall be ensured that there is flowing electrolyte in each cell of the lead-acid battery.
Steps of adding distilled water to lead-acid battery
How much water is suitable for lead-acid batteries?A 12V lead-acid battery has 6 cells, and the total amount of electrolyte in each cell is about tens to hundreds of milliliters according to the battery capacity. The parts that usually need to be supplemented only need a few milliliters to tens of milliliters. It is better to use electrolyte that has just filled the electrode plate group. The method and steps for adding water to lead-acid batteries are as follows:
Opening the lead-acid battery means that the safety valve on the lead-acid battery can be opened to directly see the interior of the lead-acid battery. The safety valve of the lead-acid battery is located below the safety valve cover of the lead-acid battery. The safety valve cover is generally glued or ultrasonic welded to the large cover of the lead-acid battery.Replenishing water for lead-acid battery shall be carried out according to the following operating procedures.
1. Preparation.Use distilled water and pure sulfuric acid to prepare electrolyte, the ratio is 500ml, distilled water, add 0.5ml, pure sulfuric acid.Prepare standard rubber safety valve for standby.Tools include: screwdriver, straw (disposable needle tube can be used instead), transparent polyethylene tube, diameter brush suitable for suction of straw (needle tube), ABS glue.
2. Pry off the cover plate above the lead-acid battery along the exhaust hole. The cover plates of some lead-acid batteries are bonded with ABS glue, and some lead-acid batteries are connected with buckles.Be careful not to damage the cover plate when prying it off.At this time, the rubber caps of six safety valves can be seen.
3. Open the rubber cap to expose the exhaust hole, through which you can see the interior of the lead-acid battery. The safety valve of some lead-acid batteries can be unscrewed. There are some fillers around the rubber cap of some lead-acid batteries. Please remove the fillers.
4. Inhale the prepared electrolyte with a dropper, and inject the electrolyte from the exhaust hole. The electrolyte shall cover the electrode plate for 1mm.
5. Cover the vent hole of lead-acid battery filled with electrolyte with a breathable shield to prevent dust from falling into the vent hole.Wait for 24h, observe whether there is flowing electrolyte (free acid) in the exhaust hole, and if there is no electrolyte, replenish it.
Put a 20cm long transparent polyethylene sleeve on the exhaust hole, and charge the nominal 12V lead-acid battery with 16.2V constant voltage current limiting charge without covering. When charging, it is better to put the lead-acid battery in an acid resistant container to prevent the spilled electrolyte from polluting the environment and corroding the equipment. After the red light starts flashing for 3h after charging, it is considered that the lead-acid battery is fully charged for the first time.
