Car won't get started for no reason? Have you ever cared about your car battery?

2022-09-21 18:14

We must have encountered a situation where the car fails to get started for no reason in our daily life. In fact, most people know that this is generally caused by the lack of battery power. When this happens, everyone will call the 4S shop or insurance company for rescue. Of course, some old drivers may boost the battery with another battery or charge the battery by themselves! But how did this happen? Can we avoid this unnecessary hassle?

Storage battery awareness

Older-fashioned batteries may require us to add electrolyte frequently. However, with the advancement of technology, maintenance-free batteries have now been used on a large scale. But even so, the battery is still a vulnerable part in the use of the vehicle, and the service life of the maintenance-free battery is generally about 4 years.

Since the battery is in the engine compartment, generally few people pay attention to it, when adding glass water they might take a look of it. As everyone knows, not caring about the battery at all will shorten its lifespan! When the car can't be started for no reason, it is not only troublesome to call for rescue, but also pay a lot of replacement costs. If it is maintained regularly, it can effectively guarantee its service life!

Inspection Method

Visual observation. Old-fashioned maintenance-free batteries generally have observation holes,   the state of the battery can be checked directly. Identify the status of the battery by visually observing the color change in the hole. Green means normal, black means the battery needs to be charged, and white means the battery needs to be replaced. Of course, this inspection method, although simple and clear, is sometimes not very accurate.

Device testing. Visual observation works for old-fashioned batteries, but newer-type batteries may not even have a magic eye, and this is where a voltmeter comes in handy. We can leave the vehicle for a period of time (12 hours is suitable). Then test the battery without starting up the vehicle. If the voltage is higher than 12V, it means that the battery is in good condition. If it is lower than 12V, it means that the battery power is insufficient!

Experience identification. Without device, we can use the light effects of the car to identify the condition of the battery. Turn on the headlights when the car is turned off. If the light is white, the battery is normal, and if the light is dim, the battery is in poor condition. Then start the engine with the headlights turned on. If the lights "blink" for a moment, it means that the battery voltage is insufficient. If the lights are dimmed when the electrical equipment on the car is turned on, it also means that the battery is in poor condition!

Maintenance

In fact, the battery does not require us to maintain it as often as the engine. As long as we pay a little attention when using the car, we can increase its service life. For example, pay attention to turn off the lights inside and outside the vehicle, turn off the air conditioner and other electrical equipment before turning off the engine. Because after the vehicle is turned off, some electrical equipment will still keep running, and the voltage of these electrical equipment will fall on the battery, which will affect the service life of the battery over time!

The battery will maintain a slow discharge state when the car is in standby condition, so if the car is not used for a long time, the car should be started occasionally to charge the battery (keep idling for about 20 minutes each time). Because the battery that is in low power for a long time, its service life will also be shortened. Of course, some people just cut off the power, they remove the wires at both ends of the battery (remove the negative pole). However, the power failure of the battery will affect the electronic equipment of some car models, so please use this method with caution.

Summary: The most important role of the battery is to power the starter to start the engine. If the battery is not in good condition, the car cannot be started. It is better if it is in a place where it can be charged. If you are in the wilderness, you need to find another car to boost the battery (note that the batteries of the two cars should be connected to the same pole, which means positive pole is connected with positive pole, negative pole is connected with negative pole). Moreover not all 4S stores and insurance companies provide free rescue. Therefore, we should pay more attention to the battery status of the car to avoid unnecessary trouble.
